Metrology - Measuring equipment and pre-packaging

Consumers trust that the quantities of goods they buy and pay for are measured correctly.

Metrology ensures that legally regulated measuring equipment such as scales in sales outlets, volumetric measuring equipment for fuel pumps, volumetric measurements for serving vessels in restaurants, etc. may be placed on the market.

The measuring equipment is controlled by market surveillance, the verification of measurement stability (e.g. recalibration) and the inspection. The FL+1 verification office is responsible for checking the measuring equipment.

The Verification Office FL+1 is also responsible for monitoring compliance with the provisions of the Quantity Declaration Ordinance.

If new measuring equipment is purchased for the sale of goods, this must be reported to the responsible Weights and Measures Office. This does not apply to dispensing vessels and drinking glasses.

The following obligations must be complied with in addition to the reporting obligation:

  • Keeping the technical documentation and the manufacturer's declaration of conformity
  • Ensure that the measuring equipment complies with the statutory regulations
  • Ensure that recalibration is carried out on time.

Note: Newly marketed measuring instruments do not bear a calibration mark until the first recalibration.

Companies that manufacture or import pre-packages must comply with the provisions of the Quantity Indication Ordinance (SR 941.204).

In particular, it contains provisions on the labeling of pre-packages, on test procedures, on requirements for bulk container bottles and on the responsibilities of the manufacturer or importer.
