Pets and wild animals
Animals that are kept in the household out of interest or as companions are considered pets. However, some of these animals are classified as wild animals.
In order to keep an animal properly, it is important to know its exact needs.
Persons wishing to acquire a dog must provide a certificate of competence (National Dog Owner Certificate theory) for first-time dog owners before purchasing a dog. If the person can prove that they have already owned a dog, this obligation does not apply. In this case, only the presentation of a dog tax invoice and/or registration with a national pet database is valid as proof, without exception.

The procedure for acquiring a dog is of particular importance. The ALKVW recommends the following brochures:
Dogs that are brought to Liechtenstein as part of a move must be declared at customs upon entry. The dog is declared as removal goods in the pet passport.
To register the dog, follow the instructions in the register "Where do I have to register my dog".
Potentially dangerous dogs require a permit. To obtain a permit under the simplified procedure, it is necessary to contact the Food Control and Veterinary Office.
