Pets and wildlife

Animals kept in the home out of interest in the animal or as companions are considered pets. However, some of these animals are classified as wild animals.

To keep an animal properly, it is important to know exactly what its needs are.

Specifics on the keeping of dogs

Persons who wish to acquire a dog must provide proof of expertise (theory National Dog Owner Brevet) for first-time dog owners prior to acquisition. If the persons can prove that they have already kept a dog, this obligation does not apply. In this case, only the presentation of a dog tax invoice and/or registration with a national pet database is considered as proof, without exception.

Of particular importance is the procedure for acquiring a dog. The Food and Veterinary Office recommends the following brochures:

Dogs that are brought to Liechtenstein as part of a move must be declared at customs upon entry. In the pet passport, the dog is declared as removal goods.

For the registration of the dog, the instructions according to the tab "Where do I have to register my dog" apply.

Potentially dangerous dogs require a holding permit. To obtain the permit in the simplified procedure, it is necessary to contact the Food and Veterinary Office.
