Nature conservation in the forest

Liechtenstein's forest is a comparatively near-natural ecosystem that serves as a habitat for many plant and animal species. Three specific implementation strategies are available for the preservation and promotion of species and habitat diversity:

  • Close-to-nature silviculture as basic utilization
Site-appropriate tree species mix; staggered forest regeneration; protection of the forest floor during timber harvesting; regeneration-compatible wildlife populations.
  • Creation of forest reserves and special forest areas
Undisturbed, dynamic forest development; preservation of old forms of management; targeted promotion of endangered species.
  • Creation of valuable small habitats
Promotion of old and dead wood; promotion of rare tree and shrub species; creation of pioneer phases rich in light and structure; enhancement of forest edges, natural reforestation of storm and clearing areas.

In Liechtenstein, a total of 1,280 hectares are currently set aside as forest reserves and 555 hectares as special forest areas. This corresponds to approx. 27% of the total forest area, which is very high by international standards.
