Crime and terrorism

As a State Party to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and its supplementary protocols on trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, and firearms trafficking, Liechtenstein focuses on prevention measures as well as measures that remove the financial incentives for criminals to commit crimes. Liechtenstein also participates in the annual meetings of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Website (CCPCJ) held in Vienna and is committed to strengthening direct cooperation between the relevant authorities.

Liechtenstein is actively engaged in international cooperation to combat terrorism and has ratified and implemented all 16 relevant UN legal instruments. Liechtenstein fulfills its reporting obligations to the relevant Security Council committee (CTC), which reviews the implementation of global counter-terrorism measures under Resolution 1373 (2001) in all UN member states. In addition, Liechtenstein is a State Party to the 1977 European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism and participates in the work of the Council of Europe Counter-Terrorism Committee (CDCT).

Effective counter-terrorism must be based on the principles of the rule of law and respect for and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Attention is therefore given to the root causes of terrorism as an important element in the prevention of radicalization, as well as to the protection of victims.
