Satellite News Gathering (SNG)

Satellite News Gathering (SNG) is a common and practical way of transmitting television signals. For example, a team can take broadcasts far from the central television station (e.g., sporting or cultural events) and transmit them on site via satellite to the home station either live or delayed. In other words, earth stations are used for SNG for short transmission of video and audio signals for the purpose of broadcasting at changing locations with only a short duration.

In Liechtenstein, SNG allocation is defined by event and location and takes place in the frequency band 12.75 - 14.5 GHz. It entitles the holder to use a frequency (a transponder) from a specified range (e.g. Rheinpark Stadium). The use may only take place within a coordinated satellite system.

The legal basis and provisions for satellite news gathering (SNG) can be found in the Law on Electronic Communications, the Ordinance on Means of Identification and Frequencies in Electronic Communications, and the Ordinance on Levying Administrative and Usage Fees pursuant to the Communications Act (all in German).

You must apply for SNG in advance with the Office for Communications using this form (in German).

Applications must be submitted to the Office for Communications at least one week prior to the start of the transmission. A fee surcharge in accordance with the above-mentioned Ordinance on Administrative Fees will be charged for applications submitted at shorter notice.
