Protected areas and objects
The scientific basis for compiling the inventory of nature priority areas is provided by natural history research in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The inventory includes the following protected areas and objects:
- Habitats worthy of protection
- Landscapes worthy of protection
- Forest sites worthy of protection
- Natural monuments worthy of protection
These areas and objects are not legally protected. However, the Inventory of Priority Natural Areas provides guidance to the authorities and must be taken into account when intervening in nature and the landscape.
In addition, the inventory forms the most important basis for the designation of legally protected areas and objects:
Nature conservation areas and forest reserves are designated as mushroom protection areas, in which mushroom picking is strictly prohibited. Certain picking regulations apply in all other areas.
The most important regulations are
- Mushroom picking is permitted from the 11th to the last day of each month.
- Mushrooms may be collected between 8:00 and 20:00.
- A maximum of 1 kg of porcini mushrooms, chanterelles and morels and 2 kg of other edible mushrooms may be collected per person per day.
- Gathering in groups of more than three people, with the exception of families, is prohibited.
The legal provisions are laid down in the Ordinance on the Protection of Mushrooms (Mushroom Protection Ordinance). The game wardens, the hunting and fishing wardens, the members of the nature guards, the mushroom inspectors, the forestry authorities and the provincial police are authorized and obliged to monitor these provisions. Mushroom experts are available from April 11 to October 31 to inspect collected mushrooms. Their contact details can be found at the following link: Mushroom picking, mushroom inspection, mushroom sanctuaries
The inventory of nature priority areas is currently being revised and will then be available digitally. Until then, it can be viewed at the AU. All protected areas and objects in the inventory as well as the legally protected areas and objects can also be viewed on the public geodata portal .
