Protected areas and objects

The scientific basis for the compilation of the inventory of natural priority areas is provided by the Natural History Research in the Principality of Liechtenstein.  The inventory includes the following protected areas and objects:

  • Habitats worthy of protection
  • Landscapes worthy of protection
  • Forest sites worthy of protection
  • Natural monuments worthy of protection

These areas and objects are not legally protected. However, the nature priority area inventory is authority-instructive and to be taken into account in interventions in nature and landscape.

In addition, the inventory forms the most important basis for the designation of legally protected areas and objects:

Nature reserves and forest reserves are designated as mushroom conservation areas, where there is an absolute ban on picking mushrooms. On all other areas, certain collection regulations apply.

The most important collecting regulations are:

  • The collection of mushrooms is allowed from the 11th to the last day of each month.
  • Mushrooms may be collected between 8:00 and 20:00.
  • Per person and day may be collected a total of no more than 1 kg of porcini, chanterelles and morels and 2 kg of the other edible mushrooms.
  • Collection in groups of more than three people, excluding families, is prohibited.

The legal provisions are set out in the Ordinance for the Protection of Mushrooms (Mushroom Protection Ordinance). To monitor these provisions are entitled and obliged game wardens, hunting and fishing wardens, members of the nature guard, mushroom inspectors, forestry bodies and the provincial police. Mushroom inspectors are available to inspect collected mushrooms from April 11 to October 31. Their contact details can be found at the following link: Collecting Mushrooms, Mushroom Control, Mushroom Sanctuaries

The inventory of nature priority areas is currently being revised and will then be available digitally. Until then, it can be viewed at the AU. All protected areas and objects of the inventory as well as the legally protected areas and objects are also available on the public geodata portal viewable.
