General

The Principality of Liechtenstein traditionally has very well-developed rights of co-determination for the people. The people can exercise their rights directly through elections and referendums in accordance with the Constitution. The possibility of submitting initiatives and referendums at both legislative and constitutional level are further important direct-democratic rights.

The Government Chancellery is responsible for all matters relating to the political rights of the people - including the organization of elections and votes.

Requirements for participation in elections and votes

According to Art. 29 para. 2 of the Constitution, all citizens who have reached the age of 18, are ordinarily resident in the country and are not eligible to vote or stand for election are entitled to political rights in national affairs.
