All employees aged 15 and above, working in Liechtenstein for an employer with a registered office or branch in Liechtenstein, are obligated to have compulsory sickness benefits insurance. Individuals employed for less than 8 hours per week or engaged in employment relationships lasting less than 3 months are exempt from mandatory insurance.

The responsibility for procuring mandatory sickness benefit insurance for employees lies with the employer. To fulfill this requirement, the employer enters into a collective sickness benefit insurance contract with a recognized health insurance fund in Liechtenstein.

The insurance coverage remains in effect until the termination of the employment relationship. If an individual continues working beyond the normal retirement age, they must continue to be insured. For those individuals subject to mandatory insurance in Liechtenstein due to their employment, the insurance concludes upon cessation of employment (e.g., in the case of cross-border commuters). The employer is responsible for notifying the health insurance fund of the insured person's cessation of gainful employment.

Half of the contributions to mandatory sickness benefit insurance for employees are covered by the employer. Additionally, the employer must make a uniformly determined contribution to the mandatory health care insurance of its employees. As of January 1, 2024, this contribution amounts to CHF 166.00 per month for adults (compared to CHF 156.50 in 2023) and CHF 83.00 per month for young people (compared to CHF 78.25 in 2023).

Youths are defined as individuals from the completed 16th to the completed 20th year of age. Reclassification to the next age group occurs on January 1 of the following calendar year.
