Assistance with criminal offenses abroad
Criminal offenses abroad
Assistance is to be provided in the form of advice and exercising your rights. Assistance will only be provided if the state in which the offense was committed does not provide any or sufficient assistance. There is no entitlement to damages or compensation for non-material damage.
Liechtenstein nationals with permanent residence in a contracting state
Under the "European Convention on the Compensation of Victims of Violent Crimes", victims of violent crimes are entitled to compensation from the contracting state in whose territory the crime, namely serious bodily injury or damage to health, was committed, provided that compensation could not be fully covered from other sources. Compensation shall be paid to nationals of States Parties to the Convention and to nationals of all member States of the Council of Europe who are permanently resident in the State Party on whose territory the offense was committed. At least the loss of earnings, medical treatment and hospital costs, funeral costs and, in the case of dependants, the loss of maintenance must be covered. On the one hand, ratification of the Convention means that those Liechtenstein citizens who are victims of a violent crime in a state party to the Convention are in a better position; on the other hand, for reasons of justice and European solidarity, it is also appropriate to address the situation of victims of intentional acts of violence on a transnational basis.
