Amateur radio

Radio amateurs are in contact with each other all over the world. They send technical information about transmission and receipt as well as personal messages. In emergency situations, they try to maintain communication.

The possession of amateur radio equipment and the receipt of amateur radio transmissions is permitted in Liechtenstein to anyone and without prior registration with the Office for Communications. However, sending messages requires special knowledge and authorisation to participate in amateur radio service with personal call sign allocation. For this reason, persons wishing to participate in the amateur radio service must provide proof of the required knowledge in the form of a corresponding certificate of proficiency. Only then can they apply for a call sign and authorisation to participate in amateur radio service.

The legal basis and provisions for amateur radio can be found in the Law on Electronic Communications, the Ordinance on Means of Identification and Frequencies in Electronic Communications, and the Ordinance on Levying Administrative and Usage Fees pursuant to the Communications Act (all in German).

The Liechtenstein prefix for call signs is HB0** or HB0*** or HB0Y** for beginners.

Note: The prefix HB0 is assigned to Switzerland according to Annex 42 of the ITU Radio Regulations.

You must apply for allocation of a call sign and authorisation to participate in amateur radio service in advance with the Office for Communications using this application form (in German).
