Sample surveys

Sample surveys are an essential tool for well-founded decision-making and analysis of societal developments. Compared to larger countries, a relatively high proportion of the population is included in sample surveys in Liechtenstein.

In order to overcome the associated challenges, the Office of Statistics has launched a joint project with Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The aim of the project is to develop a sampling strategy that minimizes the burden on the population caused by frequent and/or long surveys. This should enable a high response rate and subsequently high-quality results.

As part of the project, experts have developed three scenarios for sampling that are tailored to the specific circumstances of Liechtenstein. The “report on the development of a sampling strategy for statistical operations for the Liechtenstein Office of Statistics” provides detailed insights into the three scenarios and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. The results show that no standardized method is clearly superior. Therefore, a simulation study will be carried out in a second project phase to determine the best possible solution for Liechtenstein.
