Transfer of foreign driving license

All EU/EEA driving licences are recognized in Liechtenstein and do not have to be exchanged, provided that there are no changes to the document as a result of the move. Nevertheless, we ask you to submit a copy of your license to the Road Traffic Office.

If you wish or if there are any changes to your driver's license, you can exchange your ID card. Please submit the following documents to the Road Traffic Office:

  • Fully completed application form incl. eye test
  • Original foreign driving license

The exchanged driver's license will be confiscated and returned to the issuing authority.

General

All holders of a driving license from countries not listed below must complete a test drive at the Road Traffic Office. The following documents are required for this:

  • Application form incl. eye test (without emergency driver's license)
  • German translation of the foreign driver's license from a recognized translation agency

Holders of driving licenses from an EU/EFTA country are exempt:

Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus

and

Andorra, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea (Republic of), Croatia, Morocco, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Singapore, Tunisia, USA.

All countries not listed must complete a test drive

Foreign driving licenses with professional categories (category C, C1 and D, D1)

No test drive but a theory test for the professional driving of motor vehicles must be completed for driving licenses from

Andorra, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea (Republic of), Croatia, Morocco, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Singapore, Tunisia, USA.

Exchange of CH driving license / probationary driving license (FAP)

The driver's license must be exchanged within 14 days of taking up residence. You must submit the following documents:

  • Application form completed in full including eye test (eye test: if the last test was more than 2 years ago)
  • Original CH driving license
