Insured Persons

Liechtenstein employers are mandated to provide insurance coverage for their employees against accidents and occupational diseases. Within the realm of accident insurance, a distinction is drawn between occupational accidents, non-occupational accidents, and occupational diseases.

Compulsory insurance encompasses employees working in Liechtenstein, inclusive of home workers, apprentices, trainees, volunteers, and individuals engaged in sheltered employment or disability businesses. Those employed for the purpose of exploring career choices are also compulsorily insured for the duration of such employment.

Individuals who are not mandatorily insured include:

  • Persons involved in secondary occupations or roles for which no AHV contributions are levied on their remuneration.
  • Employee family members receiving non-monetary compensation and not contributing to AHV
  • Employees of legal entities and partnerships considered self-employed under the AHVG.

Part-time employees with weekly working hours of less than 8 hours with an employer are insured solely against occupational accidents. For these individuals, accidents during the commute to work are regarded as occupational accidents.

Self-employed individuals residing in Liechtenstein, along with their non-compulsorily insured family members working with them, may opt for voluntary insurance. The regulations governing compulsory insurance apply mutatis mutandis to voluntary insurance.

Insurance benefits are generally extended in cases of occupational accidents, non-occupational accidents, occupational diseases, and bodily injuries resembling the consequences of an accident.

Commencement and Termination of Compulsory Insurance

Insurance coverage commences on the day when the employee initiates or should have initiated work based on the terms of employment, and in any case, at the time the employee begins work.

Insurance concludes on the 31st day following the cessation of entitlement to at least half of the wages. Notably, daily allowances from mandatory accident insurance, health insurance, nemployment insurance and disability insurance (IV) are also regarded as wages to the extent that they substitute for the ongoing payment of wages.

Disability Insurance

Insurance coverage for non-occupational accidents can be extended for an additional 6 months through a provision known as indemnity insurance if agreed upon within the 31-day follow-up coverage period.
