When must an application be made?

Local traffic regulations

Signals, markings and signposts on public roads may only be installed or removed if this has been ordered by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office (for exceptions, see Art. 94 SSV).

Application for signalization

Signalization on private property, in particular the signalization of a parking ban, must always be obtained from the municipality in the official prohibition procedure in accordance with Art. 99ff of the Legal Protection Ordinance, LGBl. 1923 No. 8.

Excavation work in public spaces

The approval of the ATG (for rural roads) or the municipality (for municipal roads) is required for excavations in public road areas.

The Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office issues instructions to the construction companies for the signaling of the construction site (Art. 79ff SSV).

Excavation work may only begin once the permit and the ATG traffic regulations have been issued.

The approval of the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office (for rural roads) or the municipality (for municipal roads) is required for the use of public land, for example for scaffolding, deposits or construction site installations.

The Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office issues instructions to the construction companies for the signaling of the construction site (Art. 79ff SSV).

The use of public land may only begin once the permit and the traffic order from the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office have been issued.

Signals and markings may only be installed and removed if this has been ordered by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office and the order is enforceable.

A signalization plan must always be enclosed with the application.

The Road Signalling Ordinance (SSV) and the VSS standard sheet SNV 640 886 are authoritative for signalization, barriers and lighting. In the case of temporary signalization, especially construction site signalization, it is important that these are regularly checked and approved. The necessary acceptance protocol for signalization is provided by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office.

A fee of CHF 200 is charged for the signalization. Further costs may be incurred for

  • Publication of the order (costs will be charged to the applicant);
  • for excavation work on country roads (excluding public utility lines), the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office charges a fee of CHF 400 per m2 of surface area (Art. 67 BauV). On municipal roads, the fee is determined by the respective municipality;
  • a fee of CHF 500 per month is charged by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office for the use of public land on rural roads (Art. 67 Para. 3 BauV). On municipal roads, the fee is determined by the respective municipality.

Extension

Temporary signalization can be extended on request. A fee of CHF 50 is charged. If the duration of the signalization, including the extension, exceeds 60 days, the signalization must be published in accordance with Art. 97 SSV.
