After marriage

After marriage, the couple has various obligations and options:

  • The jointly held surname requires a change of name for one of the spouses.
  • When one or both spouses move, a change of address becomes necessary. More information on this can be found under the life topic "Relocation".
  • Foreign nationals without a valid residence in Liechtenstein can obtain a residence permit if their spouse residing in Liechtenstein applies for family reunification. More information on this can be found under the life topic "Family reunification".
  • Foreign citizens with a valid residence in Liechtenstein can have their family join them. More information on this can be found under the life topic "Family reunification".
  • Under certain conditions, foreign citizens can have themselves naturalized after marrying a FL citizen. Information on this should be obtained from the Liechtenstein Civil Registry Office.
  • Married couples can secure themselves financially through marriage contracts. This is the responsibility of lawyers based in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Prenuptial agreements relating to property can be concluded before or after marriage.
  • Married couples receive a joint tax return. Information on this can be obtained from your municipality or from the tax administration.
  • The marriage can affect the premium reduction of health insurance.

Incorporation of children born out of wedlock

A child born out of wedlock is legitimized on the basis of the marriage of his or her parents, provided that the Liechtenstein Civil Registry Office has a birth certificate and an acknowledgement of paternity. This means that on the day of his parents' marriage, the child receives the common family name chosen by the parents at the time of marriage, as well as the father's municipal and national citizenship (provided they have designated the man's name as their common family name).
