KLuGe Strassen
Paved, overheated, noisy: Roads are part of everyday life and can become a burden. The “Climate-Friendly and Healthy Roads” project demonstrates how road spaces in the Alpine Rhine Valley can be designed to be more accessible, climate-friendly, and healthier.
Heat islands or tree-lined avenues: The design of street spaces influences whether people prefer to walk, cycle, use public transportation, or drive. On some streets, problems such as a lack of green spaces, poor accessibility, air pollution, noise, and heat are also becoming more prevalent. Added to this are the consequences of the climate crisis, with more days of extreme heat and more frequent heavy rainfall. Green infrastructure refers to a network of natural green spaces that can mitigate these effects. A fair design of street spaces takes into account the needs of all users—from children to people with limited mobility to cyclists. The “Climate-Resilient and Healthy Streets” project aims to ensure that environmental and health aspects are given greater consideration in street renovations.
What concepts for fair, climate-resilient, and health-promoting roads can be implemented in the Alpine Rhine Valley? The project partners from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria are compiling successful methods and developing a customized tool for the Alpine Rhine Valley. Together with local communities, they are testing this tool in pilot projects. In addition, the project offers awareness-raising and training programs, future workshops, and an international conference for knowledge exchange. “KluGe Strassen” is part of the Interreg Alpine Rhine–Lake Constance–Upper Rhine Program and is co-financed by the European Union, the Principality of Liechtenstein, and the Canton of St. Gallen.
