Human rights and international humanitarian law

The rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights are guiding principles of Liechtenstein's foreign policy. Liechtenstein is therefore committed to the further development as well as the improved application of international law and in particular human rights. In these areas, Liechtenstein has established a clear profile and a high level of credibility.

In the area of human rights, Liechtenstein focuses on Women's rights, children's rights and the fight against torture and the death penalty. In 2014, Liechtenstein was a member of the Executive Council of UN Women, the top UN entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women's rights. Between 2023 and 2027, Liechtenstein is actively contributing to the UN's work in the field of women’s empowerment as a member of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the second time.

Furthermore, Liechtenstein is committed to strengthening international human rights structures and mechanisms as well as to combating impunity for serious human rights violations. In particular, Liechtenstein's long-standing commitment to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the global campaign to implement the Kampala Amendments on the crime of aggression should be mentioned here.

In addition to its engagement in international bodies, Liechtenstein pursues the ongoing domestic implementation of its human rights obligations. To contribute to the universality of international human rights norms and to lend credibility to Liechtenstein's foreign policy, Liechtenstein aims for a consistently high level of implementation of human rights norms. In addition, Liechtenstein strives to fulfill its reporting obligations under human rights conventions. All reports, that Liechtenstein has submitted so far, can be downloaded here.
