Postal vote
The postal vote
With the revision of the law in 2004, general postal voting was introduced in Liechtenstein, which was used for the first time in the 2005 parliamentary elections. Since then, all eligible voters have had the opportunity to cast their vote either in person at the ballot box or by post.
Organization
When the official voting material is sent out, voters receive all the necessary documents for postal voting.
Procedure
The delivery envelope in which voters receive the election or voting material also serves as the delivery envelope for postal voting.
Anyone wishing to vote by post must place the ballot paper in the envelope and seal it. He/she also signs the declaration on the back of the voting card that the vote is in accordance with his/her wishes.
The voting envelope and voting card with the signed declaration are returned to the municipality in the same window envelope in which the voting material was sent.
The stamped window envelope can then be sent to the post office or handed in at the municipal office. Postal votes must be received or handed in to the municipality by the opening of the polling station on the first day of voting (Friday) at the latest.
Delivery abroad
The municipality can also deliver the voting card and the official voting material to voters abroad. This requires a written request to the municipality of residence no later than three weeks before the election or voting day.
However, this only applies to Liechtenstein citizens who are temporarily abroad. Regular residence in Liechtenstein is still required to participate in elections and votes.
