Scope of activity

The field of activity includes, to the exclusion of medical treatment

  • the independent preparation of medicinal products according to a doctor's prescription or own formula;
  • the dispensing and storage of medicinal products;
  • pharmaceutical advice

The management of a practice pharmacy by a doctor or dentist as part of their medical or dental practice requires a license from the Medicines Control Authority.

No special authorization is required for the direct use of medicinal products on patients during consultations or in emergencies.

Professional suitability/further training

Professional aptitude is possessed by anyone who can prove successful completion of pharmaceutical studies at a university or college in Switzerland or in an EEA contracting state with a diploma or other proof of qualification.

Further training for a dispensing pharmacist lasts at least two years, whereby at least one year must be completed full-time in a public pharmacy.

Further training for hospital pharmacists lasts at least two years, whereby at least one year must be completed full-time in a hospital pharmacy under the supervision of a hospital pharmacist working independently.

Special features

Minimum sum insured for liability: CHF 3 million.

A pharmacist may not run more than one pharmacy.

A pharmacy may be run and named as a pharmacy and drugstore without an additional license.

In accordance with Art. 7 of the Health Act and Art. 4 to 10 and Art. 18 to 20 of the Health Ordinance.
