Temporary authorization
Temporary license plates are issued to natural persons (foreigners who hold a short-term residence permit (L) and third-country nationals who have held a residence permit (B) for less than two years) and legal entities that are not active in Liechtenstein. These companies require a current extract from the Commercial Register and confirmation from the Board of Directors or Board of Trustees that the motor vehicle may be redeemed.
Special license plates and control stamps are issued for motor vehicles registered for a limited period of time. The number plates lose their validity together with the temporary vehicle registration document. They do not have to be returned to the issuing authority once the period of temporary registration specified in the vehicle registration document has expired, but must be officially confiscated in the event of misuse. Each license plate bears a control mark. The control mark indicates the year and month in which the validity of the temporary enrollment expires.
Renewal
If you wish to reinstate the plates (e.g. renewal or putting them back on the road), we require a new valid and temporary proof of insurance as well as the previous temporary vehicle registration document. The renewal is only possible if the existing ID cards and plates are still valid. Otherwise, new license plates will be issued.
This registration must be paid for in cash or by debit or credit card.
Due to the increasing number of inquiries about e-scooters and e-scooters, we would like to answer the most important questions below. A current overview of various e-vehicles is also available and illustrated.
1. What is an e-scooter?
An e-scooter or e-scooter is a so-called light motorcycle without pedals.
2. Do I have to register my e-scooter?
No, as long as the maximum speed without pedal assistance is no more than 20 km/h and the motor power does not exceed 500W.
3. From what age can I ride an e-scooter (light motorcycle)?
- From the age of 14 with a valid category G or M driving license
- From the age of 16 without a driver's license
4. Where and on which roads am I allowed to ride an e-scooter on public roads?
Basically on the same traffic routes as bicycles. The signalized cycle paths must be used. This means, for example, that it is permitted to ride on the Rhine embankment or in Vaduzer Städlte (only walking speed max. 5 km/h).
5. Can I redeem an e-scooter with a maximum speed of over 20 km/h?
No, as they cannot be registered due to the lack of pedals. They may therefore only be used in a defined area accessible to a defined group of people (non-public traffic area).
6. Is a helmet compulsory for e-scooters?
No, there is generally no obligation to wear a helmet. However, we recommend wearing a helmet for safety reasons.
Detailed information on the characteristics of other e-vehicles can be found in the information sheet from the Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO).
Below you will find the AXA Insurance information sheet on liability insurance for mopeds and e-bikes.
Vehicle replacement
If you want to replace your old vehicle with a new one, we need the following documents/papers:
- Vehicle registration document of the old vehicle (for cancellation)
- Vehicle registration document of the new vehicle or form 13.20 for brand-new vehicles
- Electronic proof of insurance (eVn)
- Any other documents (rims, trailer coupling, etc.)
If the new vehicle is not registered until a later date, you can keep the license plates at home for up to 14 days. If there is a longer period of time between the change of vehicle, you will be obliged to deposit the license plates for up to a maximum of one year or hand them in to the Road Traffic Office.
Temporary traffic authorization
To the form: Temporary traffic authorization in Liechtenstein and Switzerland
Brief description
In order to benefit from the change of vehicle by post, the owner sends the required vehicle documents to the Office for Road Traffic. The declaration (see front page) must be completed and kept in the vehicle until the new vehicle registration document is received. The provisional traffic authorization is only valid for journeys in Liechtenstein and Switzerland and is valid for a maximum of 30 days from the validity date of the insurance certificate.
Insurance cover
The proof of insurance must be valid ("valid from" date must be observed). Certificates with a validity date more than 30 days in the past may not be used.
Which vehicles may be put on the road?
The temporary authorization to drive applies to heavy and light vehicles and trailers with identical number plates, as well as to motor vehicles and trailers used with interchangeable number plates. It does not apply to provisionally registered motor vehicles and trailers (plates with a red bar) or to vehicles used with daily or export passes.
Registration documents (see point 3 on the front of the form)
The documents must be sent to the Road Traffic Office that issued the license plates. If the documents are missing or incorrect, they will be returned to the owner. The definitive vehicle registration document can only be issued once all the necessary documents have been submitted. Until then, the vehicle is deemed not to be registered.
Urgency / registration date
The complete documents must be submitted to the Road Traffic Office by A Mail. The date of the postmark is decisive for registration and placing on the market. If this is not legible, the day before receipt of the documents is deemed to be the registration date.
Change of owner prohibited (e.g. leasing, rental, replacement vehicle, third party)
A vehicle registration document with the entry "Change of keeper prohibited" (code 178) may only be transferred if a company accredited by the Central Office for Credit Information (ZEK) (e.g. leasing company) has provided electronic consent or, in the case of third parties, written consent (official asa deletion form is available on the website of the Road Traffic Office). Faxed, photocopied or e-mail deletion forms cannot be accepted. If the official deletion form is missing, the documents will be returned. The vehicle is deemed not to be registered.
Vehicles with technical defects
Vehicles with technical defects (e.g. accident damage or complaints during the inspection) may not be put on the road until the technical inspection has been passed.
Delivery of the vehicle registration documents
The vehicle registration documents are sent to the owner. If you would like them to be sent to a different address, please note this on an accompanying note and enclose a reply envelope.
Change of insurance
A change of insurance must be reported to the Road Traffic Office. For this purpose, we ask you to submit a valid insurance certificate from the new insurance company as well as the current vehicle registration document.
The fee for a pure change of insurance is CHF 20.00.
For vehicles that were first put on the market at least 30 years ago, it is possible to have a so-called "veteran entry" made in the vehicle registration document. To do this, please complete the relevant application form.
For the "veteran vehicle" entry, the vehicle must meet the following conditions:
- It must have been first put on the market more than 30 years ago.
- The vehicles may only be used for private purposes.
- They must not be in regular use
(approx. 2,000 to 3,000 km / year). - They must correspond to the original design.
- They must be visually and technically in perfect condition.
The Road Traffic Office decides on the basis of an inspection whether these requirements are met. Veteran vehicle" is entered in the "special use" section of the vehicle registration document.
The inspection intervals are extended to 6 years for veteran vehicles.
For veteran vehicles, it is possible to register more than two vehicles on one interchangeable plate. However, this only applies if only veteran vehicles are registered on this number plate.
If you wish to redeem a vehicle without a veteran's entry with a veteran's vehicle on an interchangeable number plate, you can, as usual, only redeem two vehicles on one number plate.
