Family allowances

The Family Compensation Fund (FAK) pays the following family allowances:

  • Children's allowances
  • Birth allowances
  • Single parent allowances

Claim for family allowances

In principle, a person is entitled to family allowances if he or she fulfills the factual requirements for the allowances and:

  • has a civil law residence in Liechtenstein;
  • has lived or been employed in Liechtenstein and is sent abroad by his Liechtenstein employer for temporary service and continues to be remunerated by him;
  • is employed as a cross-border commuter by a Liechtenstein employer or is subject to the obligation to contribute to the Liechtenstein old-age and survivors' insurance (AHV) as a self-employed person;

Difference compensation

In principle, persons who are entitled to a similar foreign allowance are not entitled to family allowances. However, persons residing in Liechtenstein receive differential compensation if the foreign family allowances are lower than the Liechtenstein benefits.

Children's allowances

Children's allowances are paid to those who are responsible for their own offspring, adopted children, stepchildren and foster children. Orphans who have not yet reached the age of 18 are also entitled to child allowances, provided they are resident in Liechtenstein, are not dependent on their spouse and no other person receives child allowances on their behalf

Birth allowances

At the time of birth, persons are entitled to birth allowances for their natural children or for adopted children

  • of the birth of their child or
  • of taking in an elective child not more than five years old for the purpose of adoption who meet the requirements for child allowances

Birth allowances are a one-time benefit.

Single parent allowances

A single person who is entitled to child allowances is entitled to single-parent allowances. The entitlement is for each child with whom the single person lives in the same household. Single, widowed or divorced persons are considered single if they do not live in a common household with another person in a marriage-like relationship (cohabitation)

Registration of single parent allowances

The entitlement to single-parent allowances must be claimed annually by means of an application. A confirmation from the municipality of residence or other appropriate authority on the personal details of the persons living in the household must be submitted with the application.
