Stand up - small effort, big effect

Sitting for a long time endangers health

Have you ever thought about how many hours you sit per day? Or how often you stand up while doing so?

The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has compiled some information and facts on the topic of standing up.

Information on how to be more active, how to move more and how to implement it in everyday life can be found under "Documents"

The current Swiss physical activity recommendations

- At least 2½ hours of physical activity per week in the form of everyday activities or sports of at least moderate intensity. The baseline recommendation can also be achieved by 1¼ hours of sport or high-intensity exercise, or a combination of both. Ideally, activities should be spread over several days a week. Women and men who are already active can do even more for their health, well-being, and performance with additional training of endurance, strength, and flexibility.

- Adolescents should exercise at least 1 hour per day. Younger children significantly more. In addition, young people should engage in activities several times a week that strengthen bones, stimulate the heart and circulation, strengthen muscles, maintain flexibility, and improve dexterity.

- Older people are advised to move as much as possible, even if they are not able to fully achieve the basic recommendations. Older people who are already active can do even more for their health, well-being, performance, and independence with additional training of strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance.
