Tasks of the Media Commission

The tasks and duties of the Media Commission are set forth in the Media Act of 19 October 2005, Liechtenstein Law Gazette 2005 no. 250 (in German), the Media Promotion Act of 21 September 2006, Liechtenstein Law Gazette 2006 No. 223 (in German), the Media Promotion Ordinance of 25 February 2025, Liechtenstein Law Gazette 2025 No. 180 (in German).

Specifically, these are

a) advising the government on all matters relating to media policy

b) preparing the annual budget, annual report, and annual financial statements for the government

c) making recommendations to the government on media-specific or media-related issues

d) issuing statements on media-specific or media-related issues at the request of the government

e) monitoring the media policy environment

f) recognizing a foreign code of ethics for journalists

g) raising public awareness of the fundamental social function of the media

h) preparing and publishing periodic reports on developments in the media landscape and journalistic quality; the reports shall be prepared at least every four years and published in an appropriate manner

i) issuing rules of procedure; these require the approval of the government

j) performing the tasks assigned to it by other laws and ordinances, in particular the Media Promotion Act and the Liechtenstein Broadcasting Act.

The Media Commission was appointed by the Government for a four-year term beginning on 1 November 2025 as follows:

Media subsidies

Applications for media subsidies must be submitted in writing to the President of the Media Commission no later than the end of April of each year and must include a specific request and a brief and complete statement of how the subsidy requirements are met. All documents and receipts relating to the previous calendar year that are suitable for certifying eligibility for subsidies as well as the type and scope of the subsidies sought, in particular the costs for which compensation or reimbursement is sought, must be enclosed. Late applications will be rejected without further proceedings.
