Potassium iodide tablets

The intake of potassium iodide tablets (potassium iodide 65 mg) is ordered by the authorities via radio in the event of an incident in which radioactive substances are released. It prevents radioactive iodine, which is absorbed via the respiratory tract, from accumulating in the thyroid gland. However, they do not offer general protection against radiation that affects the body from outside. Therefore, if you are at risk from radioactivity, you must go inside the house or to a cellar or shelter.

Protecting the thyroid gland with potassium iodide is considered a safe and harmless measure. If the tablets are taken in accordance with the instructions on the package leaflet, hardly any side effects are to be expected. Doctors and pharmacists are fully informed about the effect and the corresponding precautions and alternative measures. If you are unsure, please ask your doctor at your next visit to your GP.
