Mobile communications

There are currently three mobile communications companies licensed in Liechtenstein who operation their own transmitting network:

Telecom Liechtenstein AG

Swisscom (Switzerland) AG

Salt (Liechtenstein) AG (formerly Orange (Liechtenstein) AG)

Unintended roaming in the border area

In areas close to the border, it can happen that a mobile phone or data card/USB modem connects to a foreign mobile network due to an overreach of foreign mobile communication stations. This is the case if a mobile phone or data card is simultaneously within range of a national transmitting station of your mobile network operator and that of a foreign mobile network operator. Caution is therefore required when using mobile phones or mobile data services in border areas. It is advisable to select "manual network selection" and check the correct setting on the mobile phone display or in the connection software. In many cases, it is also possible to block roaming services altogether. Information about blocking roaming services can be obtained from your operator. Further information is available here.

Legal framework

Liechtenstein mobile operators are subject to Liechtenstein legislation and thus to EEA law. This means that all Liechtenstein mobile network connections are subject to European Directives for mobile communications. This applies in particular to compliance with maximum rates, cost control provisions and information obligations towards the customer (info SMS). Further information is available here.

More than three quarters of the approximately 44,000 mobile subscriptions in Liechtenstein are part of Swiss mobile operators with the number +41 7xx xxxx, which means that these mobile subscriptions are subject to Swiss legislation. Please note that Swiss roaming rates are applied to these subscriptions, and these can be considerably higher for default pricing compared to domestic operators. Furthermore, the reachability of Liechtenstein emergency numbers cannot be guaranteed. Please also note that contractual matters are usually handled according to Swiss law and the place of jurisdiction is in Switzerland.
