Registered partnership

Registered partnership

Same-sex couples have been able to register their partnership in the Principality of Liechtenstein since 01.09.2011.

Couples who wish to register their partnership in the Principality of Liechtenstein must contact the Civil Registry Office in Vaduz. At the earliest 6 months and at the latest 3 weeks before the registration of the partnership, the required documents must be submitted there. The preliminary procedure can only be initiated once all legal requirements have been met.

Which documents are required for the registration of the partnership?

Please inquire at an early stage at the Liechtenstein Civil Registry Office which documents are required. Different documents are required depending on the home country and civil status.

Recognition of a partnership registered abroad

For the recognition of a partnership registered abroad, an original partnership certificate (certified with apostille) is required.  In addition, a complete original birth certificate (certified with apostille) and a copy of the valid passport or ID card of the foreign partner must be enclosed as well as the form "Complete details for the recognition of a partnership registered abroad at the Civil Registry Office Vaduz" must be filled out completely. These documents must be handed in personally at the counter of the Civil Registry Office Vaduz. If a third person is commissioned, this person must present a power of attorney.

The fees for the recognition are CHF 150.00 and can be paid directly at the counter of the Civil Registry Office.

Citizenship

The registered partnership has no influence on the acquisition and loss of Liechtenstein citizenship.

Naming after registration of the partnership

The partners retain their names.

When registering the partnership, they may declare that they wish to bear the name of one partner as their common name.

The person whose name does not become a common name may declare that he or she prefixes or suffixes his or her previous name to the common name, placing a hyphen. If this person already bears a double name, he or she may use only one of these names of his or her choice.

Ceremony

The ceremony will take place in the wedding room of the Civil Registry Office in Vaduz. No witnesses are required.
