Schengen/Dublin

The cooperation of European states in the areas of justice, police, visas and Asylum Division, known as "Schengen/Dublin", was launched in 1985 by five member states of the then European Community EC (Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg) as a kind of experiment and has since established itself as an effective instrument in the area of security and Asylum Division.

Today, 27 European states participate in Schengen, including non-EU member states such as Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, which are referred to as associated states.
