At its public session on June 14, 2024, Parliament debated and passed the amendment to the Teachers’ Service Act in accordance with Bill No. 52/2024 during its second reading. 

The new law, which has been renamed the Teaching and School Support Staff Act—or the Teaching Staff Act (LPersG) for short—will thus formally take effect on August 1, 2024. 

The amendments to the law primarily concern the following areas: 

1.  Scope of Application and Title of the Act
2.  Permanent and fixed-term employment contracts
3.  Equal treatment of teachers in PS and KG
4.  Employment relationships in job-sharing arrangements
5.  Delegation provision regarding the authority to regulate the evaluation of teaching staff

The implementation of individual amendments to the law is taking place gradually in many areas. In particular, the employment contracts of teaching and support staff are being successively converted into permanent contracts. Both the Legal Department and the “Support” Division of the Office of Education are already working intensively on implementing the Teaching Staff Act.
