Waste water

The Office of the Environment exercises supervision over the disposal of wastewater.

The municipalities are responsible for general drainage planning (GEP), the construction and operation of public sewage systems, and the approval and supervision of private property drainage systems.

The supra-local collection of wastewater and its purification in the Bendern wastewater treatment plant is the responsibility of the Abwasserzweckverband der Gemeinden Liechtensteins

The discharge of wastewater from commerce and industry into the public sewer system or into a body of water requires a permit from the Office for the Environment.

Micropollutants are organic trace substances that occur in very low concentrations  in water bodies (billionths to millionths of a gram per liter). Some of them can have harmful effects on aquatic life even at these low concentrations and are not desirable in drinking water.

The Office of the Environment regularly tests wastewater for micropollutants.

A study is underway to clarify the feasibility of a treatment stage to eliminate micropollutants (EMCs) at the Bendern WWTP
