Digital tachograph
As is well known, the digital tachograph (DFS) was already introduced in the EU on May 1, 2006. In Liechtenstein, it was introduced on an optional basis on August 1, 2006 and definitively from October 28, 2006.
The difference in the timing of the introduction in Liechtenstein was due to the fact that the relevant regulation only became binding for EEA states, including Liechtenstein, after it was incorporated into the EEA Agreement.
The following dates are binding for Liechtenstein:
- Vehicles with DFS could be registered from August 1, 2006. However, this date was not mandatory, but voluntary, i.e. from August 1, 2006 until the definitive introduction date (October 28, 2006), vehicles with both digital and analog tachographs could be registered in Liechtenstein.
- From October 28, 2006, when the relevant national amending ordinances came into force in Liechtenstein, all vehicles had to be equipped with DFS,
a) that are put on the road for the first time;
b) which must be newly equipped with a tachograph; or
c) which were put into circulation for the first time before January 1, 1996 and in which the entire tachograph system has been replaced.
For vehicles that were registered in Liechtenstein with an analog tachograph between May 1, 2006 (mandatory date in the EU) and October 28, 2006, problems could arise during checks in the EU member states. For this reason, the Office for Road Traffic has issued a confirmation in five different European languages on the legal situation and the associated subsequent introduction of the digital tachograph in Liechtenstein. This confirmation is available from the Office for Road Traffic and should always be carried in the vehicle in the event of an inspection by the foreign authorities.
The Office for Road Traffic serves as a coordination point in the event of any problems with the foreign authorities. The following special Internet access points, the FL website and the FEDRO website provide information about the digital tachograph and the obligations for companies and drivers.

Change of payment method for driver and company cards
in order to be able to continue to offer these two types of card at a favorable price and to keep collection costs low, advance payment will be introduced as the only payment method for driver and company cards. To ensure that the processing procedure is only slightly longer, the "Prepayment via e-banking" option is offered. You will receive all the details required for the payment and the invoice as a PDF by e-mail and can make the transfer immediately via e-banking. Alternatively, you will receive a paper invoice by post. With both options, the driver and company card will only be produced once payment has been registered with FEDRO.
