Night driving permits
The night driving ban applies from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Sunday driving permits
The Sunday driving ban applies on all Sundays and public holidays.
The ban on Sunday and night driving does not apply:
- For the transport of foodstuffs that are not deep-frozen, ultra-heated or sterilized and whose consumption period is 30 days or less.
- For the transportation of animals for slaughter and sport horses.
- For the transportation of cut flowers.
- Vehicles for the transportation of persons
- Agricultural vehicles
- Vehicles carrying a semi-trailer with a body used for living purposes
- Fire department, civil defense, ambulance, police and disaster relief vehicles
- Commercial tractors, motorized carts and work carts and their trailers, provided that the vehicles are used exclusively for agricultural journeys during the prohibited periods.
Vehicles that fall under the Sunday and night driving ban:
- Heavy motor vehicles over 3.5 tons
- Commercial tractors and working motor vehicles over 3.5 tons
- Semi-trailer motor vehicles with a permissible gross train weight of over 5.0 tons
- Vehicles carrying a trailer with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons.
Exceptions to the ban on driving on Sundays and at night are only permitted if the journey on Sunday and at night is urgent and cannot be avoided either by organizational measures or by choosing another means of transport.
Permits to drive on Sundays and at night may be issued for
- For the transportation of circus, showman, market driver, orchestra, theater material and the like.
- For the transportation of daily newspapers with editorial content and postal items within the scope of the legal obligation to provide services as well as for trips for current television reports.
- For journeys during the construction and maintenance of roads and railways as well as utility lines (e.g. electricity, water and telecommunications lines).
For each authorized transport, a quarter of the load volume can be filled up with other goods.
Who issues the permit?
These permits are issued for Liechtenstein by the Road Traffic Office or, in Switzerland, by the canton where the journey requiring a permit begins, with validity for the whole of Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
