Children, minors and people under guardianship

Children, minors and persons under guardianship must apply for a passport accompanied by their legal representative.

Passports are valid for five years for persons up to the age of 12, from the age of 12 they are valid for 10 years.

A photo is required for children from birth. Even if the face of a small child is not yet as informative as that of an adult and also changes quickly, it already has some clearly visible features such as the position of the ears, the shape of the eyes, etc., which can contribute to identification. Further information on the quality of the photo can be found under the photo sample table.

  • For children up to the age of 7, three crosses ("xxx") are shown instead of the signature in the passport
  • For children up to the age of 12, no fingerprints are stored on the chip in the passport.
  • For children up to the age of 14, the printout in growth is indicated under size.

Child entries in passports are no longer possible for security reasons. Existing child entries in previous passports are still valid until the passport expires, but no longer than until the child reaches the age of 15.
