Entry-Exit-System (EES)
The Entry-Exit System (EES) is a central European information system that electronically records the entry and exit of third-country nationals at the Schengen external borders. With the introduction of the EES, the previous manual passport stamping will be gradually replaced by a digital procedure. This affects all third-country nationals who wish to travel to the Schengen area for a short-term tourist stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
In future, the following data will be recorded electronically for visa-exempt persons entering or leaving the Schengen area: personal and travel document data, date and place of entry or exit, and biometric data (facial image and four fingerprints). For persons requiring a visa, this data will be taken directly from the Visa Information System (VIS) and supplemented with the missing data in the EES.
The EES facilitates the control of the permissible length of stay of third-country nationals and supports the fight against illegal residence and cross-border crime. The data collected is stored in a central system across the EU and is available to the competent authorities for the purposes specified by law. In Liechtenstein, the EES is used by the Foreigners and Passports Office (full access) and the National Police (query).
The national implementation of the EES in Liechtenstein was launched as a project in 2019 and is part of the Schengen-wide introduction. The Office for Foreigners and Passports is responsible for the national implementation of the project. The Office for Information Technology and the National Police are also involved in the project. The project costs are almost entirely refinanced by EU funds (ISF Borders and BMVI).
