Forest and wood

Liechtenstein is a forest country

With an area of 6,865 hectares, Liechtenstein's forests cover around 43% of the country's total area. It is therefore not only one of the most important landscape elements, but also plays an important role in protecting the settlement area from natural hazards on the steep slopes of the Three Sisters Massif and in the Alpine region.

The Forest and Landscape Division of the Office for the Environment is the supreme supervisory body for all forests in the country and is responsible for enforcing the Forest Act. The active services of the Forest and Landscape Division include supporting the municipalities as forest owners in forest maintenance, the construction of suitable infrastructure for forest management and nature conservation tasks in the forest.

Our forests are managed according to the principles of near-natural silviculture. The aim is to create healthy, species-rich and structurally diverse stands with tree species suited to the location, which can sustainably perform a variety of tasks. The Liechtenstein Forest Act provides the legal framework for this.
