Information about INSPIRE

INSPIRE

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted Directive 2007/2/EC establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE - Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) in March 2007.

The objective of the INSPIRE Directive is to make high-quality geospatial data held by Member State authorities accessible under uniform conditions to support the formulation, implementation and evaluation of European and national policies. This creates the conditions for a forward-looking cross-border design of environmental and nature protection as well as the monitoring of the measures taken and their success.
Due to its EEA membership, Liechtenstein is committed to implementing the INSPIRE Directive into state law.

The Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 March 2007 establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) creates the legal framework for the use of geospatial information in Europe across national and administrative borders.

The basis for the development of the infrastructure is formed by the so-called Implementing Rules. In total, implementing rules in the form of a regulation or decision have been adopted for INSPIRE in the following areas:

  • Metadata
  • Network services
  • Interoperability
  • State of implementation
  • Rules for use of data and services

For the concrete technical implementation of the implementing rules, the accompanying "Technical Guidance" documents, which are of a recommendatory nature and are published on the INSPIRE website, are particularly relevant.
