Strict regulations and controls ensure that blood and blood products are handled correctly and that no diseases are transmitted. Anyone wishing to collect blood in Liechtenstein for transfusions or for the manufacture of therapeutic products requires a license from the Office of Public Health for the Liechtenstein market.

The Swissmedic inspectorate checks the requirements for a license on behalf of the Office of Public Health.

Only blood and blood products that originate from certified establishments in Switzerland or Austria (Feldkirch State Hospital) may be used in the Liechtenstein State Hospital. Donors are selected in accordance with international standards.

The transfusion of blood and blood products must be carried out in accordance with the criteria of the "Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Transfusion Practice". The Swiss working group "Quality Assurance in the Use of Blood Products" published these guidelines in July 2017. The laws and criteria mentioned therein are also applicable to Liechtenstein.
