Avalanche Service

Organization and tasks

The Avalanche Service was founded in the 1970s and is primarily responsible for prevention and intervention during avalanche events.

The members of the Avalanche Service are appointed by the government for a period of four years. In particular, the Avalanche Service is responsible for the protection of inhabited settlements, public transport routes, and marked winter hiking trails.

During the winter months, the snow situation is constantly monitored by the core group and necessary measurement data collected. This results in recommendations for action and suitable safety measures, including evacuations. Depending on the measures taken, both the population and the media are informed promptly.  The measures currently taken are published here.
