Mpox (monkeypox)

What is Mpox (monkeypox), how can you catch it, what are the symptoms and how are they treated? We offer you information and recommendations here.

Mpox: The virus

Mpox (formerly monkeypox) is a viral disease transmitted to humans from animals, presumably rodents, and belongs to the family of orthopox viruses. Two Mpox clades are currently known:

  • Clade I (previously spread in Africa)
  • Clade II (known variant in Europe and Switzerland)

Human-to-human transmission is also possible. Transmission of the virus (Monkeypox virus, MPXV) occurs through close contact with infected humans or animals. For more information on transmission, see Transmission of the disease.

Currently, only one imported case of Mpox clade I from Africa has been reported in Europe. In view of the increase in Mpox clade I cases in several African countries, the WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) for Mpox.

According to the current state of knowledge, there is no risk to the general population.

For travelers to Africa, the risk of infection remains low if precautionary measures(prevention) are observed.
