Agglomeration program

Between the Alvier and the Liechtenstein Alps, the Werdenberg-Liechtenstein agglomeration stretches for about 30 kilometers in the Rhine Valley. The cross-border area is home to 80,000 inhabitants and employs 68,000 people.

In order to be able to actively meet the constantly growing challenges in this strongly networked region in the future, the association Agglomeration Werdenberg-Liechtenstein was founded in November 2009. Its members are the six municipalities of Werdenberg and eleven of Liechtenstein, the municipality of Sargans as well as the Canton of St. Gallen and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The city of Feldkirch is involved in the decisions as an observer.

The purpose of the association is to strengthen cooperation, the joint development of future prospects and their implementation for the agglomeration, and the efficient fulfillment of public tasks. In addition, the association is the sponsor of the agglomeration program Werdenberg-Liechtenstein, which was notified to the federal government by the canton of St.Gallen in December 2007. It elaborates the agglomeration programmm, prepares its implementation and promotes its continuous development.

The Werdenberg-Liechtenstein agglomeration program, with its future vision and proposed measures, enables the coordination of cross-cutting transport, settlement and landscape issues within the Werdenberg-Liechtenstein functional area and was accepted by the Federal Office for Spatial Development ARE in 2014. Infrastructure projects in the region will be supported accordingly with 7.8 million Swiss francs.

After the discontinuation of the S-Bahn Liechtenstein as a central backbone of the 4th agglomeration program Werdenberg-Liechtenstein, it was decided on the part of the sponsoring body in August 2020 to forego the submission of a 4th program generation.

The 5th generation of the agglomeration program Werdenberg-Liechtensten is currently in preparation. It will be submitted to the federal government for review at the beginning of 2025.
