Winterdienst

Districts

The approximately 100 km of national roads in Liechtenstein are divided into three districts.

- Unterland district with the maintenance depot in Mauren

- Oberland district with the depot in Vaduz

- Triesenberg district with the maintenance depot in Triesenberg

In Bendern (Unterland) there is a salt silo with a capacity of 25 tons for loading the sidewalk ploughs. A bag storage facility with a capacity of 25 tons is located in Schaanwald.

In Vaduz (Oberland) there is a salt silo with a capacity of 200 tons and a brine plant with a tank of 10,000 liters. There is also a bag storage facility with a capacity of 25 tons.

Four salt silos with a total capacity of 600 tons and a grit silo with a capacity of 200 tons are available in Triesenberg for the roads at higher altitudes.

On-call service

From November 15 to March 31, a 24-hour on-call service with a small spreader is on duty, monitoring all three districts and acting as a point of contact for the police and road maintenance. If necessary, this on-call service will call on individual or all seven subcontractors, who have a precisely defined route and task, to clear snow or spread salt. The on-call service also deploys the respective road maintenance team leaders and sidewalk clearing contractors outside of business hours.

Four employees are fully assigned to the on-call service. Two employees are on call as substitutes.

Subcontractors

The seven subcontractors provide their vehicles and drivers and are equipped with body spreaders and snow plows by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office. The services of the subcontractors are monitored and invoiced by the Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office using state-of-the-art electronic means (GPS).

In the Triesenberg district, two snow blowers are provided by two other contractors. The use of these machines is also monitored using GPS. Like all other contractors, those who provide the snow blowers are also assigned precisely defined tasks. However, they are called out directly by the head of the Triesenberg depot. One of the snow blowers is stationed in the Malbun ski area, the other starts from Triesenberg.

The ten sidewalk clearing vehicles are provided by the same number of contractors and are called out by the on-call service or the group leaders.

Own vehicles for winter road clearance

The Civil Engineering and Geoinformation Office itself has a 12.5-ton Unimog with snow plough and salt spreader, a 5.5-ton municipal vehicle with plough and salt spreader, three vehicles with small snow ploughs and a vehicle with a salt spreader body. These vehicles are mainly used during the winter service season for clearing bus stops and squares, for on-call service or for emergencies.
