Admission and transfer / school careers

Pupils experience changes again and again during their school career. This includes the admission process from elementary school to a type of lower secondary school. Transfers within the school types are also possible later on under certain conditions. There is also the possibility of transferring from a private school or foreign school to the public schools.

Comprehensive and holistic assessment

In the fifth grade, teachers and parents are faced with the question of which secondary school type best suits the individual child. Parents receive information about secondary schools at an information evening and are informed about the admissions process at a parents' evening at the school.
The child should neither be underchallenged nor overchallenged, his/her talents and inclinations should be encouraged, and he/she should be supported in overcoming any school difficulties. The class teacher can assess the child's probable further academic development on the basis of the various assessments. Based on the observations and assessments in learning, working and social behavior as well as the regular learning checks in individual subjects and the level of performance thus determined, the teacher recommends the child for a particular type of school. The parents inform the teacher of their wish for assignment.

Decision in the admission procedure

If parents and teacher agree, they jointly submit the opinion developed in the assignment meeting for the attention of the school board. If parents and teacher do not reach an agreement on the assignment, the child may take a transfer examination. The school board makes the final decision on all assignments

2. Transition opportunities at the secondary level

Children and adolescents develop at different rates, and there are always times when individuals may feel under- or over-achieved. When this happens, there is an opportunity to take advantage of the many transfer options and permeability across all levels. The important thing is that learners feel comfortable and that they can be challenged and encouraged according to their own learning abilities.

The provisions for promotion and transfer at the lower secondary level are set out in the Ordinance on Admission to and Promotion and Transfer at Lower Secondary Level, LGBl. 2001 No. 140 contain. Relevant for the pupil evaluation and/or the report are there in particular the art. 9 to 23 and 32.
