Travel medicine

Traveling to distant countries involves certain risks that should be recognized and taken into account in good travel planning.

Risks can be:

  • The long duration of the trip
  • The climate
  • The diet
  • The altitude of the destination above sea level
  • The planned actions (diving, hiking, climbing)
  • The expected "adventures"
  • The dangers of infection.

All these risks can be reduced by preparation and precautionary measures. A very useful address is the homepage of the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Appropriate advice can also be obtained, for example, from tour operators, good travel guides and your family doctor.
