Hazard map

Hazard maps show which settlement areas are threatened by floods, avalanches, landslides or rockfall. There is a separate map for each of these 4 hazard categories. The maps show which areas will be flooded during the next storm, where avalanches will fall, or which slope could slide.

In addition, the hazard map contains detailed information on the causes, sequence, spatial extent, intensity and probability of occurrence of natural events.

Benefits of the hazard map

1. Spatial planning

The hazard map serves as a basis for spatial planning processes of municipalities and the country  (e.g., definition of hazard zones in local planning and formulation of     building requirements in hazard zones)

2. risk reduction measures

The hazard map helps in locating and dimensioning protective measures (e.g., stream barriers, avalanche barriers, etc.).

3. Instrument in emergency planning

The hazard map shows where the greatest hazards occur and events are most likely to occur. Emergency planning can be guided by this.

4. Raising awareness among the public

The hazard map helps to show the population possible hazards and to raise awareness for possible protective measures.
