Hazard map
Hazard maps show which settlement areas are threatened by floods, avalanches, landslides or rockfall. There is a separate map for each of these 4 hazard categories. The maps show which areas could be flooded in the next storm, where avalanches could fall or which slopes could start to slide.
The hazard map also contains detailed information on the causes, course, spatial extent, intensity and probability of occurrence of natural events.
Benefits of the hazard map
1. Spatial planning
The hazard map serves as a basis for spatial planning processes of municipalities and the country (e.g. definition of hazard zones in local planning and formulation of building regulations in hazard zones).
2. Risk reduction measures
The hazard map helps with the localization and dimensioning of protective measures (e.g. stream barriers, avalanche barriers, etc.).
3. Instrument for emergency planning
The hazard map shows where the greatest hazards occur and where events are most likely to happen. Emergency planning can be based on this.
4. Raising public awareness
The hazard map helps the population to identify potential hazards and raise awareness of any protective measures that may be required.
