Consular

Passport and identity card

Liechtenstein passports and identity cards can only be applied for at the Swiss embassy abroad, with the exception of the Foreigners and Passport Office (APA) in Vaduz. For Liechtenstein nationals residing in Germany, the Swiss Embassy in Berlin and the Swiss Consulates General in Frankfurt a.M., Munich and Stuttgart are responsible.

Further information on the issuing process and the documents to be submitted can be found on the website of the Foreigners and Passport Office (APA).

Entry and visa regulations for Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein generally has the same entry regulations as Switzerland. Detailed information on the regulations and visa requirements for entering Liechtenstein can be found on the website of the Foreigners and Passport Office (APA).

Staying in Liechtenstein

The website of the Foreigners and Passport Office (APA) describes the various options for living or working in Liechtenstein (with or without gainful employment). The Foreigners and Passport Office also issues the relevant permits.

Registration of Liechtenstein nationals abroad

Liechtenstein citizens residing abroad for longer than 12 months should register with the responsible local diplomatic or consular representation to ensure that they receive consular protection in emergency situations. Where Liechtenstein does not have its own representation, Switzerland assumes Liechtenstein's interests on the basis of the 1919 Agreement on the Diplomatic and Consular Representation of Liechtenstein Abroad. If Switzerland is not represented in a country, the respective Austrian representation takes care of Liechtenstein nationals.

Liechtenstein nationals can appear in person at the relevant representation and identify themselves by means of a passport. If a personal visit is not possible, the necessary forms can be ordered from the competent representation by telephone or e-mail or obtained from the
FDFA website. You can also register via the FDFA's online counter.

By registering, administrative matters such as changes in civil status or applying for travel documents can be dealt with on the spot. In emergency situations, such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks, registration enables local officials to make contact quickly, search for missing persons or provide rapid assistance.

Further information on consular services can be found on the FDFA website.
