Beginning of statistics

The first statistical surveys were carried out in Liechtenstein from 1784 in the form of population censuses. These were initially carried out at irregular intervals, but from 1891 a census was generally conducted every 10 years.

Official statistics were institutionalized in the middle of the 20th century. In 1943, Andreas Eberle began statistical work on family allowances as an employee of the government chancellery, later also on old-age and survivors' pensions, and set up the “Statistics on National Tax”. On December 14, 1950, the government approved the official title “Office for Child Welfare and Statistics” and in 1956 the name was changed to “Office of Statistics”. Important statistical publications included the “Statistical Tables”, the forerunner of today's Statistical Yearbook. The publication at the time contained statistical information on the age structure and marital status of the resident population, on foreigners, on businesses located in Liechtenstein, on tourism and on health insurance companies.

In the course of the retirement of the then Head of Office, the Office of Statistics was incorporated into the Office of Economic Affairs at the beginning of 1976 under the name “Official Statistics”. The Statistics Act came into force in the same year. Since 1 January 2009, Liechtenstein's official statistics have once again been organized as a separate, professionally independent Office of Statistics.
