Biological safety

Genetically modified or pathogenic organisms that occur naturally in the environment can pose a risk to humans and the environment and are therefore regulated by law. The placing on the market and use in closed systems and in the environment require a permit from the Office of Environment. The area of biological risks is managed in collaboration with the Canton of Zurich's Biotechnology Unit (KSF).

An overview of approved genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the EU and Switzerland is provided in the fact sheet "Genetically modified organisms in Switzerland and the EU". The list serves as an overview. No guarantee is given for completeness and accuracy.
