Authorization procedure

1) Permit applications must be submitted in full, truthfully and in the correct form before taking up gainful employment or intended residence.

2) Incomplete, illegible or unsigned applications will be returned to the sender with a one-off deadline of 30 days for completion. If the deadline expires without being met, the application is deemed to have been withdrawn.

3) As a rule, decisions on applications are made within the following deadlines:

a) Short-term residence permits, permits in letter form, permanent residence permits and cross-border commuter permits within two weeks of receipt;

b) Residence or settlement permit within three months of receipt

c) for all other permits within four weeks of receipt

4) If the factual and legal situation is identical, future identical applications will be informally rejected with reference to the decided legal case.

Note:

1) Neither residence nor gainful employment may take place until the corresponding permit has been granted or the visa has been issued.

2) Nationals of a third country must wait for the assurance or authorization to issue a visa abroad.

3) Nationals of a third country who are family members of an EEA or Swiss national residing in Liechtenstein and who do not require a visa to take up residence may await confirmation in Liechtenstein.

4) The validity of an assurance is limited to a maximum of six weeks for short-term residence permits and generally three months for residence permits.
