The following options are available when taking a vehicle out of circulation:
Cancellation of license plates
The vehicle registration is canceled and the license plates are destroyed. Taxes are automatically refunded when the plates are handed in. A corresponding notification is also sent to the insurance company.
Cancellation of the license plate and disposal of the plates
The vehicle registration document is canceled and the license plates can be deposited for up to a maximum of one year. The fee for depositing is CHF 50.00, for motorcycles and trailers CHF 30.00. Taxes are automatically refunded when the plates are returned. A corresponding notification is also sent to the insurance company.
Deposit of plates
If you do not use your vehicle for a certain period of time, you can deposit the license plates to stop the taxes and insurance. The fee for depositing is also CHF 50.00, for motorcycles and trailers CHF 30.00. When the plates are returned, the taxes are automatically refunded. A corresponding notification is also sent to the insurance company.
Cancellation of license plate
You can cancel your license plate if you redeem a new vehicle within 14 days. In this case, the taxes and the insurance premium will not be interrupted, provided it is not an interchangeable license plate.
Please note: The Road Traffic Office recommends that you cancel the corresponding vehicle registration document if you resell the vehicle.
