On-site recording

Many countries already use (partially) automated inspection systems to verify individuals. Verification is when biometric reference data is compared with a biometric sample to determine whether the person in question is who they say they are. When inspecting a machine-readable travel document (MRTD), it is possible to determine whether the MRTD and the person really belong together. To do this, the data stored on the MRTD (biometric reference data), for example fingerprints, are compared with the person's biometric sample. In addition to the classic MRTD (passport and identity card (ID)), biometric data is also used for other documents/applications, including residence permits (biometric residence permit (BPP)), visas and, in some cases, driving licenses. In Liechtenstein, it is planned that on-site capture will be used in future for all documents issued by the Migration and Passport Office (APA) for which a biometric facial image is mandatory. In addition to passports and IDs, this also includes the BPP.

Project results/objectives

  • Creation of identity documents with facial images in accordance with technical requirements, printed in the document and stored on the chip in combination with high-quality fingerprint images
  • Preventing identity forgery and fraud by ensuring the integrity of the registration process
  • Reduce false matches and increase correct matches of facial and fingerprint images
  • Facilitation of control processes, e.g. fast and efficient border controls
  • Technical and organizational implementation of on-site registration at the APA in Vaduz
