Electrosmog (non-ionizing radiation)

When people talk about “electrosmog” in everyday life, they are usually referring to technically generated electric and magnetic fields.

The term EMF (electromagnetic fields) is commonly used internationally. Electromagnetic fields do not have sufficient energy to break (“ionize”) chemical bonds (molecules) in organic tissue. Therefore, these fields are also called “non-ionizing fields” or “non-ionizing radiation.”

Non-ionizing radiation occurs wherever electric current flows and, consequently, magnetic fields are present.

To protect the public from electrosmog, the government issued the Ordinance on Protection from Non-Ionizing Radiation (NISV) in 2008. This ordinance limits the non-ionizing radiation emitted by fixed installations (e.g., high-voltage power lines, cell phone or broadcast transmitters).

Current Sites

Based on a model calculation conducted in 2022, a cadastre for high-frequency non-ionizing electromagnetic fields was created for the Principality of Liechtenstein. The quality of the model calculation and changes over time were validated through temporary measurement campaigns conducted in 2022 and 2023.
